Inspect and maintain.
Have a qualified HVAC contractor inspect and maintain your home heating/cooling system annually.
Signs that your system may need service include:
System noise – In hydronic systems, pipes may roar or gurgle. In forced air systems, ductwork may rattle.
Uneven heating – Some rooms are too cold while others are too hot.
Frequent repairs are needed.
Energy bills rising over and above fluctuating energy costs.

Replacements
Replace old, outdated and/or inefficient equipment with Energy Star-rated models.
Consider replacing your heat pump if it is more than 10 years old. Look for Energy Star rated replacements.
Consider replacing your furnace or boiler if it is more than 15 years old. New equipment is far more efficient than older models.

Thermostats
Replace a conventional thermostat with a new programmable thermostat.
Program the thermostat to lower settings at times when rooms are not in use and when you are sleeping.

Double-check
Thermostats
Check thermostats to make sure your heating and cooling system is operating per the program you set.

Make Adjustments
Turn down the temperature of your hot water heater (120 degrees).
Turn your thermostat up a few degrees in summer and down a few degrees in winter.

Check Filters
Inspect, clean and/or replace air filters in furnaces, heat pumps, central air conditioners, etc.

Inspect and Repair
Have a qualified contractor seal air ducts in attics and crawl spaces.
Check your attic, attic stairs, basement and attached garage walls to make sure your home is sufficiently insulated. Insulate as needed, particularly the attic.

Seal
Seal all air leaks.
Inspect, then caulk or add weather stripping to doors and windows as needed.
Seal switch plates and electrical outlets.

Insulate
Insulate hot water pipes.
Insulate your water heater with an insulating blanket.

Simple Step
Close the damper when not using your fireplace.

Easy-to-do
Keep radiators clean and dust free.
Don't block radiators with drapes, furniture, etc.
Don't place objects on radiators.

A good habit
Close the doors to rooms that aren't in use.
